Where to eat when in Shanghai?: Wagas Cafe

If you're in East Nanjing Road and looking for something to eat for breakfast or a place to have a quick break, try Wagas Cafe. They have daily promotions such as 50% off on breakfast before 10am (the store opens at 7am), 35 RMB for Coffee&Cake from 2-6pm, and a free Sangria drink after 6pm for every order of pasta.

We tried their 50% off breakfast. They offer different varieties of wraps and sandwiches for this promotion. Coffee is not included. Fortunately for us we are not coffee drinkers, a glass of water is more than enough for breakfast! (Frugal mode! haha)

Where to eat when in Shanghai?: Baoluo Jiulou

Who would have thought this place is a restaurant offering great food?

Baoluo Jiulou is one of the recommended restaurants in Shanghai by Lonely Planet. During our 4 days in Shanghai before this, we haven't really tasted Shanghai-anise cuisine, so we decided to give this one a try.

We had difficulty looking for it because the restaurant does not have an English sign - which we didn't know until we got there. Luckily, the map was accurate.  It's after Faigo restaurant but before Cantina Agave. 

Upon entering, you'll see a narrow space with one table and a receptionist. We thought that the restaurant was a tiny one. But then the staff accompanied us to the dining area which was further inside, and it was huge! Good thing it was Monday, so there was still a vacant seat for us. According to Lonely Planet, the restaurant is always full so it is better to reserve beforehand.

The waiters don't understand English, but this time, we were ready. We had a Mandarin translation of "What is your best seller" :) Since the menu also has a picture of the dishes plus English translation, we didn't have a hard time ordering.

The appetizers are a plate of nuts, corn, and sweet potatoes, and a fruit platter.  When these were delivered, I was expecting an additional charge on our receipt but there was none. :)

And these were the three dishes that we ordered. I forgot to take a shot of the seafood fried rice.

We had a great night there! So if you're in Shanghai, you should give this a try. If you haven't reserved a seat and they're fully occupied, fret not! There is a lot of restaurants in this area which are also highly recommended such as Cantina Agave, Faigo, and Guyi Hunan Restaurant.

Food Quest in Shanghai @ Babi Food

We were walking along East Nanjing Road, finding something to eat for breakfast when we found a food stall selling baozi, commonly known as "siopao" in the Philippines.

So many people queued here so we decided to give it a try.

When it was Jori's turn, he just pointed out one of the food items on display because the vendors don't understand English. Then when we tried it, whoa! We just ordered the plain siopao, without any fillings! :p Nyaha. Oh well, we did not want to waste any more time queuing so we just had our breakfast at McDonalds. :)


So next time you're in China, you should learn the Chinese translation for "What's your best seller?". :)

We survived Shanghai: Day 3

For our breakfast, we had hot beef noodles to match the weather. A typhoon hit Shanghai on our third day there. We were lucky because the rain wasn't that strong and so we were still able to tour around.

First stop was the Longhua temple. It can be reached by taking Shanghai Metro Line 3 to Longcao Road Station, Exit 1. Walk eastwards for around 15 minutes to reach the temple.

Our next stop was supposed to be at Qibao but we didn't have any time left since we needed to reach Xujiahui station by 12pm to attend Sunday mass.


So we went straight to St. Ignatius Church. It is just behind Line 1 Xuijahui Station.

It was still raining pretty hard after the mass, so we found shelter at a nearby mall. We had lunch here, check out my previous post on Bellagio Cafe at Grand Gateway mall.

Then we left the mall, good thing the sun was already shining! :) We went to Luijazu station to check out a different view of The Bund - where the Orient Pearl and Jin Mao tower are.


Before we went there we first passed by the Super Brand Mall to check out H&M. :)

Then we strolled around Lujiazu Park where one can see a great view of the buildings at The Bund.

If you want to stay until night to see the lights, this is the best place to be! (Aside from Super Brand Mall hihi)

Then we went for dinner at Cafe de Coral, Super Brand Mall.

Where to eat when in Shanghai?: Bellagio Cafe

One of the things I love about Shanghai is the food. Almost every restaurant that we tried was fantastic! Plus I find it cheap (and I am not only comparing it to the restaurants here in Singapore but as well as in the Philippines). 

Bellagio Cafe is included in my favorite restaurants list in Shanghai. It is a Taiwanese restaurant which has several branches in Shanghai. The one that we tried was at the Grand Gateway Mall which is near Huashan Lu, Metro Line 1, Xujiahui Station.

The place has a nice ambiance - purple chairs and black tables, decorative walls and ceiling plus chandeliers. It  looks like an expensive restaurant but actually it's not that pricey. We paid around 800-1000 php for the dishes that we ordered.

Another must-try! Though this one's also sweet, we didn't regret that we ordered both. I love the combination of the pork and pancakes - which is like a thin crepe.

Too bad I wasn't able to try their shaved ice desserts and smoothies, which I heard is another must-try. Oh well, luckily I think I will have my second chance soon. :) I just read that there is a branch of this restaurant in Manila at Greenhills, San Juan, Metro Manila. It is named Lugang Cafe- Bellagio in Manila. I'm excited to eat there on December! :)
